Privacy policy

This page explains what data BreakShare collects, why, and how it's used. BreakShare is a small, independently-run tool. This isn't a legal document drafted by a law firm, but it's an honest, plain account of what actually happens with your data.

What we collect

When you check a single school's dates, nothing is sent anywhere. That lookup runs entirely in your browser against the built-in break-date list.

When you use Groups, the information you and your group members enter (names, college selections, custom college break dates, class schedules, and meetup details) is stored either:

• only in the browser that created the group ("demo mode"), if no real backend is configured for this deployment, or
• in a Firebase (Google Cloud) database, if the site operator has configured one, so the group can sync across everyone's devices.

If you type your first name when you create a group, it's saved with the group and shown on the group link's preview card ("Turner invited you to plan Thanksgiving") wherever the link is shared. The preview picture only shows the group's schools and shared dates, never anyone's name.

Anyone who has (or guesses) a group's join code or share link can view and edit that group's data. There are no user accounts or passwords. Treat a group's join code like you would a shared document link.

Analytics

If enabled on this deployment, we use Google Analytics (GA4) to understand overall traffic and usage: page views, general location (city/country level, from IP address), device type, and similar aggregate metrics. This sets a cookie in your browser. You can decline this in the cookie banner shown on your first visit, or by clearing that choice in your browser settings; declining doesn't affect anything else about the app.

Advertising

This site may show ads served by Google AdSense. Google and its partners may use cookies and similar technology (including the DoubleClick cookie) to serve ads based on your visits to this and other sites, and to measure ad performance. This can include personalized advertising, depending on your Google ad settings and the consent choices available to you.

You can review or opt out of personalized advertising at Google's Ads Settings, or generally at www.aboutads.info. Learn more about how Google uses data from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

Other third-party services

• Google Fonts: the typefaces on this site are loaded from Google's font CDN, which receives your IP address as part of serving the font files (standard for any site using web fonts).
• Firebase (Google Cloud): if configured, group data is stored in Google's Firestore database.
• Google AdSense: if ads are shown, they're served by Google; see "Advertising" above.

What we don't do

We don't sell your data. We don't have a login system, so we don't hold passwords or verify identity.

Your privacy rights

Europe, the UK and Switzerland (GDPR). Before Google uses cookies to show you personalized ads, you're asked for consent through Google's consent message, and you can change that choice later from the same message. Analytics can be declined in the cookie banner. You can ask us for a copy of the group data you've entered, or ask us to correct or delete it, by emailing hello@breakshare.app. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.

California and other US states with privacy laws (including the CPRA). Ad cookies set by Google can count as "sharing" personal information for targeted advertising under these laws. You can opt out with the "Do not sell or share my personal information" link Google shows on this site in those states, or through Google's Ads Settings. You also have the right to know what we hold about you and to ask us to delete it; email us and we'll respond within 45 days. We won't treat you differently for using these rights.

Data retention and deletion

You can remove a person (and their schedule) from a group at any time using the "Remove" button. Anyone with the group's code can permanently delete the whole group (names, schedules, and meetups included) using the "Delete group" button; since there are no accounts, having the code is what stands in for membership. Leaving a group without deleting it just stops it from showing up in "Your groups" on your device; the group itself still exists for anyone else with the code. Clearing your browser's site data removes anything stored locally (demo mode groups, your "last group" shortcut).

Children's privacy

BreakShare is intended for college students and isn't directed at children under 13.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes in a meaningful way, we'll update the date at the top of this page.
