Do friends at different colleges get the same breaks?
Updated October 29, 2026. Built from the official 2026-27 academic calendars of the colleges on BreakShare.
Thanksgiving almost always lines up. Winter break usually gives friends at different colleges three or more weeks together. Spring break is where plans fall apart: only 26% of college pairs share the whole thing. We compared all 468,996 pairs of the 969 US colleges on BreakShare to find out how often breaks overlap.
Thanksgiving: nearly everyone is off together
More than 99% of college pairs share at least four days off over Thanksgiving week. Colleges differ on whether the break starts Monday, Wednesday or Thursday, but almost all of them are closed Thursday through Sunday, so that long weekend is the safest time to plan anything with friends at other schools. See which schools take the whole week in the Thanksgiving 2026 calendar.
Winter: plenty of overlap, cut short in January
Two colleges picked at random share a median of 24 days off between December and January, and 78% of pairs share three weeks or more. The overlap tends to end in early January: colleges on the quarter system and those with a required January term start classes then, while many semester schools stay off until mid or late January. Break lengths for every school are in the winter break 2026-27 list.
Spring: usually only a weekend, or nothing
Spring break is where friends at different colleges miss each other. Of all college pairs:
- 26% share the full break.
- 6% share part of it.
- 38% overlap only on a weekend, because one school's break ends the same weekend the other's begins.
- 30% share no spring days at all.
The weekend-only overlap is the most common outcome. It happens because most colleges take one of two back-to-back weeks in March (see what the spring break 2027 calendars show), and nine-day breaks that start a week apart share exactly one Saturday and Sunday.
- University of Michigan and UCLA: spring break in common, no days.
- University of Michigan and University of Florida: spring break in common, 2 days (Mar 13 to 14).
- University of Georgia and University of Michigan: spring break in common, 9 days (Mar 6 to 14).
Living close by helps less than you might expect. Colleges within 100 miles of each other share the full spring break 29% of the time, compared with 24% for colleges 1,000 miles or more apart.
The bigger the group, the smaller the window
Every college you add to a group can only shrink the days everyone has off. We drew 20,000 random groups of three, four and five colleges and checked what they share:
| Group | Share at least 3 spring break days | Typical winter days in common |
|---|---|---|
| 3 friends | 11% | 23 days |
| 4 friends | 3.4% | 20 days |
| 5 friends | 1.3% | 19 days |
For a group trip, winter break and the Thanksgiving weekend are realistic. A spring break trip with friends at three or more colleges usually means someone misses class or the trip shrinks to a weekend.
What to do with this
- Plan the big reunion for winter break, and check when the earliest school in your group goes back in January.
- Use the Thanksgiving weekend for short trips. It is the one stretch almost every college shares.
- For spring, look for the weekend where two back-to-back breaks meet. A Friday-to-Sunday trip often works when a full week doesn't.
- Check the actual calendars. Averages hide the pairs that line up perfectly and the ones that never do.
Start a group, add everyone's college, and BreakShare lists every day you are all off, for this year and next.
How we did this
We used the 2026-27 break dates of 969 US colleges (including DC and Puerto Rico), taken from each school's official academic calendar. For every pair of colleges we counted the days both are off in three periods: Thanksgiving week (Nov 20 to 30, 2026), winter (Dec 1, 2026 to Jan 31, 2027, plus any winter break that starts earlier in November), and spring (Feb 1 to Apr 30, 2027). Days include weekends inside a break. Distances are straight-line miles between campuses. Group figures come from 20,000 randomly drawn groups for each size.
